Deep in the woods surrounding the Axe and Sickle, one tree stands taller than the others. So tall in fact that it strikes against the skyline. A great Dawn Birch, 5 meters across, whose leaves sparkle in the light of both sun and moon. The air here is…untroubled, as if it recognizes the sanctity of the present moment. This is the life and home of Olania, the luckiest Dryad in the world.
[But how did it get here?]
The Zheng Confederacy is an elegant country. Beautiful, and respectful of nature. But it's not kind, and is certainly not the place you turn to for protection of liberty or homeland. Many people are born here, many are saddened by this, and a few even bond over it. Some people leave, seeking freedom or security, but Olania's tree forced her to stay.
The Zheng had many political factions, which meant lots of political squabbling and showmanship, which meant lots of taxes. More money still was spent on maintaining her legal ownership of the land around her tree. It wasn't much compared to an adventurer's salary from overseas, though, and a nest egg of thousands of gp slowly built, being buried in sacred and hidden places all around the forest. Still, there was always the possibility of a different kind of leader to take control of the region. One who was inclined to a show of force, or even just one who needed a lot of lumber. The danger was forever looming.
That is, until Alabaster came back.
Seeing him approach, he looked like a completely different person from the man who had left her many, many months ago. His hazel skin had darkened with a tan, his hunch was gone, and there was confidence in the way he walked. Even as he hauled the (no doubt borrowed) cart behind him with his trademark tenderness, Olania could already hear the chink-chink sound of vast coinage within. Even Domu looked different, in his own little way, and behind them was someone entirely new: a giant half orc, with a smile showing off vicious teeth. But it was only after joy filled hugs and greetings and kisses beneath the mask that Alabaster's most radical change was revealed. An idea. He was determined to move out again, and this time, he was going to take her with him. Come hell or high water.
From a simple engineering perspective, it was absurdly difficult. Olania's tree had to weigh hundreds if not thousands of tons. Not only did they have to carry it in a procession over a journey that took a month by foot, but they also had to carry all the dirt surrounding the roots while making sure the whole system was kept healthy. Luckily, Alabaster's great charity had earned him acclaim with the Good peoples of the forest. When he asked, they answered, and brought their small share of elemantals and giants. Kaya was around and as strong as ever. Alabaster himself was a Druid who could Diminish the tree for the move then embiggen it afterwards, and Zheng holy men with Move Earth assisted too. They totally also did it only out of the goodness of their heart, with Olania's coin having nothing at all to do with their involvement. And so the march began. The weeks dragged on into months. There was always another emergency, or breakdown of schedule. Someone who had to leave, or a leak in the giant crate containing the soil, or a government agent who took the escape as the giagantic sign of rebellion that it was. Nonetheless, they eventually made it. Once her tree was in place, Olania personally saw to it that a luxurious treehouse was put in halfway up in the forest canopy, so she could once again enjoy time alone with her husband. And so, they lived in peace. Olania and Alabaster can be seen both in town and tending to the berry patch near the casterhaus. Alabaster in particular will often visit the Casterhaus itself to say hi. They maintain enough of a fund to continue their loan service, and adventurers heading out of town on their next expedition are encouraged to take some Goodberries from the berry patch on their way out, just as a light snack.
