Woodcoins are small, painted pieces of dense wood. They are functionally worthless.
Woodcoins were originally created by the Wretched Crawler during its time as an adventurer. Being the frequent quartermaster, the Crawler insisted on being as anal as possible1) during division of the loot, so created Woodcoins to increase precision.
Despite requiring about 200 pounds of woodcoin to be worth one gold piece, not to mention the bulk, woodcoins are nonetheless nigh-universally accepted. On pain of annihilation.
Indeed the town of Fairfield was recently tormented by the Crawler's forces for refusing to accept woodcoins. In a related incident, the town is constantly burning with eldritch green flames and everyone in it has either died or evacuated to the Ohm Bastion.2)
If you intend to attack the Wretched Crawler, we strongly recommend bringing a cart.
