“Raiding Malderry.” - Norrish idiom meaning 'a simple task'.
The life of an average Malderric is often one of hardship. The life of a Malderric lord is often short. Even before Norrstader warriors began raiding the island several centuries ago, the island had gone through two plagues and a dozen wars to keep together a fracturing monarchy. The Malderric often look back to the time before these struggles as a golden age, and are grasping backward for that forgotten glory.
In the current times, however, Malderry is beset on two sides. To the northwest, Norrish invaders come to either pillage or permanently settle, establishing themselves as lords. More recently, Aldan lords have set their sights on the island, having given up on Aberfoyle and looking for a place to test their mettle. For the Malderric peasants caught in the middle of all of this, all they can do is keep their heads down and pay their taxes to whoever is claiming dominion over the land they toil on. The unlucky ones are enlisted into the eternal wars for dominion.
Government
Once, Malderry was a kingdom united under a single crown. Now, it is a fractured realm of petty princes and foreign invaders all trying to put the pieces back together by driving out the opposition. What each competing lord has in common is a feudal system. The native princes and the Aldan lords have practiced feudalism for centuries, of course, but even the Norrish warlords who have taken slices of the island have seen the appeal and adopted the system of governance. The titles they use are varied, with many of the more prominent Braelic lords styling themselves as kings in an attempt to forge some kind of legitimate claim to rule. The Norrish lords tend to call themselves jarls, with the Aldans maintaining their usual peerage.
Inhabitants
Despite the size of the island, Malderry is incredibly diverse thanks to its many foreign invaders. Each group tries to maintain its own culture, with the Norrish and Aldan invaders generally forming insular communities that rule over the native Malderric population. The Malderric are hardy, stoic people who have mostly accepted their lot in life and try to toil on to eke out a living. They are fair of skin and tend to have brown or red hair. They wear whatever clothing they can afford, usually linen and wool. There are very few dyes available on the island for the average person, leading to a drab assortment of colors.
Geography
Climate
Malderry's climate is extremely mild with frequent rainfall. The coastal mountains protect the inland from much of the harsh weather common to islands.
Ecology
Much of Malderry consists of untamed woodlands and swamps. There are some open areas which have been developed with limited farming to support the populace, though many Malderric derive their sustenance from hunting and foraging.
Landscape
