Culture

Negana is a land of reverence and respect. Neganans place a great deal of value in cordiality and civility, such that even bitter enemies will speak civilly and have reasoned debate with each other. Raising one's voice out of anger is frowned upon, and great pains are undertaken to find compromise. This is not always practical, however, so there is also a tradition of finding trusted third parties to settle disputes.

Key to Neganan culture is the respect for the dead. Even the average Neganan can feel the power of incarnum and can wield it to some extent – usually to seek guidance on important matters. Those who train can achieve incredibly skill, producing incarnum masters who can rival archmages and saints. Neganans recognize the source of this incredible power, and they revere it.

Government

Negana is ruled by its emperor, known as the chakravarti. The emperor has the absolute authority in the nation, heading everything from its armies to its administration. At every lower rung of the ladder, however, is an elected official. Each village elects a representative to lead it, each of these representatives elects a leader for the region, and each of these regional leaders elects a representative for whichever of the nine provinces they reside in. These provincial leaders carry out the will of the chakravarti, and pass it on down through those who elected them. As a result, the common people have much more leverage over their governance than in feudal systems.

Inhabitants

Neganans generally believe that all living beings are equal, which has led to integration with the nearby tribes of orcs which would be shocking to humans in other lands. The orcs, happy to be treated as potential friends rather than potential adversaries, willingly integrated into Neganan society several centuries ago, and now live freely as citizens of the empire.

Neganan skin tones range from olive to near-black, and their hair is usually pitch black. In general, Neganans wear simple, practical clothing. They believe that their spirit and character that will persist after their death is more important than material wealth, and so few adorn themselves in finery.

Geography

Climate

Negana's climate is diverse, with the northern areas near the coast being warm and receiving heavy rain. To the South, it gradually grows colder and drier.

Ecology

Negana's ecology is likewise diverse. The warmer northern regions produce a great deal of spices and fruits, while the more elevated terrain to the South produces vast quantities of rice on terrace farms which feed the continent. There is some animal husbandry in the higher terrain.

Landscape

The terrain is relatively flat in the North, with many rivers flowing into the ocean. To the South, the terrain gradually rises, until sharply ascending into huge peaks at the southern end of the Empire.

Ancestor Worship

The worship of the dead is a core tenet of Neganan society. Virtually everyone holds some reverence for those who came before, and as an adendum to this, hold life as sacred (since the living are the not-yet-dead). As a result, vegetarianism is the norm in Negana, and the consumption of meat is frowned upon. Pacifism is also normal in Neganan society, though it is the sort of pacifism that understands that the ability to defend oneself is a prerequisite for peace.

Udayahism

Many Neganans venerate the Udaya, a figure who transcended his mortal existence. While he did not seek to create a following himself, many hold his ideas in high regard and try to emulate his lifestyle. Thanks to the lack of a central authority, however, what exactly his lifestyle was, leading to disagreements and many diverse practices.
